Historical Importance of Monument : There are beautiful carvings of Lord Buddha and inscription in the brahmi script carved on the wall of cave. Cave 1= Verandah in front ( 53 feet long and 8 feet wide). Cave 21= seated Buddha with attendants. Cave 8 and Cave 15 has a high dogoba. The name originates from name from two villages in the nearby of Mahad namely Pale village; earlier known as Palipattan (as per a 11th century stone inscription belonging to the Shilhara king Anant deva). It has been also mentioned in an ancient Greek text “Periplus of Erythraean Sea” dated 247 BC where Pale is mentioned as Palaipatyai.The other village is Gandhare village which is deserted since long. There are few stone steps to the top and can be climbed in only just 15 minutes. You can find some remnants of water cisterns near these caves.
