Historical Importance of Monument :
A Chinese pilgrim, Song Yun, described it as one of the great cities lying along the vital business route to India. It is one of the biggest Buddhist ruins in Gandhara. The Takht Bahi complex contains a cluster of stupas located in a central courtyard, the monastic chambers, consisting of individual cells arranged around a courtyard, assembly halls, and a dining area and a temple campus, containing of stupas and similar to the Stupa Court. Some structures were used as residences or meeting halls. Buildings construction was done with local stone, and lime and mud.
Takht-I-Bahi was excavted during early 20th century. Sergeant Wilcher discovered many statues at Takht-i-Bahi In 1871. Statues tell the tales of life of Buddha and Bodhisattva. It is believed that the monastery was possibly a double-storied building. In 1980 it was embraced with the UNESCO World Heritage site. Coins of Buddhist era are found at the site. Site also contains stupas, the monastery, and the meeting hall. Ashoka built the eastern gate of the town outside of which existed a stupa and a sangharama known as Khaperdra. The complex was constructed during different time periods by various kings and emperors like Gondophares, kushan rulers. Takht-i-Bahi is a great source of information on Buddhism and the way of life people here used to follow.
