Historical Importance of Monument : Kolkewadi village is located in Chiplun taluka of Ratnagiri district, India. These are group of Buddhist caves. These amazing caves are situated on the edge of mighty Sahyadri mountain range. The period of these caves is from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD. The original name of the village where these caves are located was Koliwadi. It is said that in this village, koliya people used to live during buddha and ashoka era. The journey from Koliwadi to Kolkewadi is the journey of 3 thousand years old. After Buddha, the construction of the Buddhist caves began during Emperor Asokas reign. The caves are located at height of 2625 feet. It is difficult to understand the reasons why these caves are built on high altitude. These caves are damaged due to lack of maintenance. The caves are buried under layers of soil and stones. Kolkewadis earlier name was Koliya Wadi. Koliya people used to live in the surrounding area. Nearby there are Theravadi Buddhism caves, which are damaged due to frequent shocks of earthquakes, and are the caves are on the verge of destruction. These cave complex are having chaitya and stupas. There are water tanks the caves complex. There are around 29 caves. Overall, this complex of 29 caves is one of marvelous historical place of Konkan and especially Chiplun, which can be considered as one of the highest altitude Buddhist Caves in India.
