Dhankar gompa Buddhist monastery in Himalayas.
An ancient monastery, 1000 years old; belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism
Its is name of is a village and also a a Buddhist temple (Gompa).
Dhang or dang means cliff, and kar or khar means fort. Hence Dhangkar means fort on a cliff.
It also literally means ‘a place in the mountains unreachable for strangers’.
Situated at an height of 3,894 metres (12,774 feet) in the Spiti Valley near Dhankar Village, between the Kaza and Tabo.
The complex is constructed on a 1000-foot (300-metre) high ridge on the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers.
Dhankar was built as a fort monastery on typical Central Tibetan prototype.
It is a 16th century old fort monastery, which has also served as a prison in the erstwhile era. During the 17th century, it was the seat of the early rulers of Spiti, the Nonos.
