Historical Importance of Monument : 1700 year old statue of the Buddha attaining enlightenment are considered the oldest such statue in the world found are unique to the region of Kashmir, Pakistan. It is one of the best preserved and precious sites in the Taxila Valley. This complex also hosts 1700 year old statue of a sleeping Buddha. It is about 48 feet i.e. about 14.6 meters long. The iconic pose of Budhhas mahaparinirvana (death of Buddha) is said to be originated from Greco-Buddhist artwork of Gandhara civilization. At this site around more than 500 relics were discovered inclusive of copper coins, iron nails, door sittings, pottery and 14 coins from the Kushan era. British archeologist Sir John Marshal (1876–1958) did the initial excavation of the ruins of Bhamala Stupa during between 1920 -1930. In the year1980, UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site. Another rare and unique statue of Buddha with double halos was found at this site. The Gandharan civilization flourished during 6th century BCE and 5th century CE. They created the earliest carved images of Lord Buddha on different types of materials like stone, stucco, terra-cotta, and bronze. These artworks were placed in nearby Buddhist temples and stupas. The shape of key stupa is cruciform. It is believed to be the largest of this shape around Taxila and Gandhara territory. The stupa is cross shaped. It appears resembling an Aztec Pyramid. There are roughly 19 small votive stupas nearby the key stupa.
